Student Opportunities

With a focus on protecting and promoting the God-given dignity of every human person, the Klau Institute’s programs enable students to explore moral questions while learning about the laws, policies, and theories at the core of civil and human rights.
The institute offers a minor in civil and human rights for undergraduates as well as a diverse array of courses, research opportunities, and experiential learning for students at all levels in all disciplines.
Get Involved
Melsheimer Fellows
This two-year experiential learning program gives undergraduates an opportunity to serve the local community and get involved with research and legal assistance work on campus. Fellows become closely connected with faculty and other students who are interested in civil and human rights.
Student Affiliates
Open to all undergraduate and graduate students, Klau Institute affiliates build community while enjoying extracurricular activities and promoting civil and human rights to the rest of the Notre Dame campus. Student affiliates also receive priority when applying for Klau’s funding opportunities.
Summer Law Fellows
Each year the Klau Institute sponsors summer fellowships for Notre Dame law students working in public interest organizations that promote civil or human rights. Fellows receive funding to assist with travel and living expenses, and then share their experiences with the Notre Dame community.
Study Civil and Human Rights at Notre Dame
As part of the Keough School of Global Affairs, the Klau Institute provides students with a moral framework to examine issues of justice and human dignity. In addition to an academic minor for undergraduates, a multitude of courses are available focusing on domestic and international topics.
